A giant squid has washed up on a beach at Bahia Bustamante.
They are deep-ocean dwelling animals that can grow to a tremendous size: recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 metres (43 ft) for females and 10 metres (33 ft) for males.
Like all squid, a giant squid has a mantle (torso), eight arms and two longer tentacles.
Giant squid are very widespread, occurring in all of the world's oceans.
Encounters with this huge invertebrate have always been rare--and distant but recently, in April of 2008 a live colossal squid was found stranded to the surface at Bahia Bustamante in Patagonia waters.
Colossal squid are known to inhabit the abyssal depths of the ocean primarily in the Southern Ocean that circumnavigates Antarctica.
The giant squid is somewhat less mysterious to scientists, though still little is known about its biology.
